Around 11m people are registered disabled in the UK. This is around 1 in 4 of all adults. They have real financial muscle, with a combined spending power of about £8Obn. But:
- Only 1 in 2 work, compared with around 4 in 5 non-disabled people.
- About 8 in every 10 without qualifications are out of work.
- If you’re disabled, you’re more than twice as likely not to have qualifications and to live in relative poverty.
- Over 1 in 2 families with disabled children are living on the breadline.
- Disabled people are twice as likely as non-disabled people to be dependent on social housing.
- Disabled people are stuck at home: on average, they travel 1/3 less than the population.
And over 90% of people believe that disabled people should have the same opportunities as everyone.
